๐ Practice Problems
1Problem 1easy
โ Question:
What should you bring to the ACT test center?
A) Calculator, pencils, ID, admission ticket B) Only your admission ticket C) Cell phone and calculator D) Laptop computer E) Study materials to review
๐ก Show Solution
Knowing what to bring prevents test day problems.
ACT Test Day Essentials:
Required items: โข Admission ticket (printed or digital) โข Photo ID (school ID or driver's license) โข #2 pencils (multiple, sharpened) โข Approved calculator (for Math section)
Optional but recommended: โข Watch (analog, no smart watches) โข Snacks and water (for breaks) โข Extra calculator batteries
Prohibited items: โข Cell phones (must be turned off and stored) โข Smart watches โข Study materials during test โข Laptops/tablets โข Notes or books
Step 1: Evaluate options
A) "Calculator, pencils, ID, admission ticket" โข All essential items โ โข All permitted โ โข Complete list โ CORRECT!
B) "Only your admission ticket" โข Missing ID (required!) โ โข Missing pencils and calculator โ
C) "Cell phone and calculator" โข Cell phone prohibited during test โ โข Must be turned off โ
D) "Laptop computer" โข Not permitted โ โข ACT is paper-based โ
E) "Study materials to review" โข Cannot use during test โ โข Should study before, not during โ
Answer: A) Calculator, pencils, ID, admission ticket
Test day checklist: โก Printed admission ticket โก Valid photo ID โก 3-4 sharpened #2 pencils โก Approved calculator (TI-84, etc.) โก Extra batteries โก Watch (non-smart) โก Snack and water โก Know test center location โก Arrive 30 minutes early
2Problem 2medium
โ Question:
You have 5 minutes left in a section and 8 questions remaining. What is the BEST strategy?
F) Spend all 5 minutes on the first remaining question G) Leave all 8 blank H) Quickly bubble in random guesses for all 8 J) Work carefully on 2-3 questions, then guess strategically on the rest K) Ask for more time
๐ก Show Solution
Time management strategy when running out of time.
Situation: 5 minutes, 8 questions left
Time available: 5 minutes รท 8 questions โ 37 seconds per question Too little time to work all problems carefully!
Step 1: Understand ACT scoring โข No penalty for wrong answers โข Blank = 0 points, Guess = 25% chance (1/4 for A-D) โข Never leave blanks!
Step 2: Optimize your strategy
Best approach:
- Quickly identify easiest remaining questions
- Work those carefully (2-3 questions)
- Strategically guess on the rest
- Fill in every bubble (never leave blank!)
Step 3: Evaluate options
F) "Spend all 5 minutes on first question" โข Only 1/8 questions attempted โ โข 7 questions left blank (0% chance) โ โข Wastes guessing opportunities โ
G) "Leave all 8 blank" โข Guaranteed 0 points โ โข No penalty means always guess! โ
H) "Quickly bubble random guesses for all 8" โข Better than blank (25% chance on each) โ โข But misses chance to work easier ones โ
J) "Work carefully on 2-3, then guess strategically on rest" โข Maximizes points on easier questions โ โข Still guesses on others (no penalty!) โ โข Uses all available time effectively โ BEST STRATEGY!
K) "Ask for more time" โข Not allowed - time limits are strict โ โข Unrealistic โ
Answer: J) Work carefully on 2-3 questions, then guess strategically on the rest
Strategic guessing tips:
- Eliminate obviously wrong answers
- Look for patterns (ACT balances A, B, C, D over test)
- Choose same letter for all guesses (statisticallyequal)
- Never leave blanks!
Time management: If you have 1/4 of time needed: โข Work 1/4 of problems carefully (easiest ones) โข Guess on remaining 3/4 โข Better than rushing through all and making careless errors
3Problem 3hard
โ Question:
During the ACT, you notice you've been filling in the wrong row on your answer sheet (you're one question ahead). With 10 minutes left in the section, what should you do?
A) Continue with the wrong row and fix it later B) Panic and give up C) Immediately stop, carefully erase and correct all bubbles, then continue D) Tell the proctor and request a new answer sheet E) Ignore it and hope for the best
๐ก Show Solution
Handling answer sheet mistakes requires calm, strategic thinking.
Problem: Answers are bubbled one row off Time remaining: 10 minutes
This is a serious error that MUST be fixed! Wrong row = all answers marked wrong = major point loss
Step 1: Assess the situation โข How many questions are affected? โข How much time to fix it? โข Can you still finish?
Step 2: Evaluate options
A) "Continue wrong row and fix later" โข No time "later" - test ends when time's up โ โข Will get all questions wrong โ โข Catastrophic error โ
B) "Panic and give up" โข Wastes 10 minutes โ โข Ensures poor score โ โข Not productive โ
C) "Immediately stop, carefully erase and correct all bubbles, then continue" โข Fixes the critical error โ โข 10 minutes might be enough โ โข Prevents total loss โ โข Better to finish fewer questions correctly than many wrong โ BEST!
D) "Tell proctor and request new answer sheet" โข Wastes precious time explaining โ โข Proctor may not allow mid-test โ โข You can fix it yourself faster โ
E) "Ignore it and hope for the best" โข Guarantees all wrong answers โ โข No benefit to hoping โ
Answer: C) Immediately stop, carefully erase and correct all bubbles, then continue
Step-by-step fix:
- STOP immediately when noticed
- Take a breath (stay calm!)
- Find where error started
- Carefully erase wrong bubbles
- Re-bubble correctly (double-check numbers!)
- Continue with remaining time
- If time runs out, guess on remaining questions
Prevent this error: โข Check question numbers every 5-10 questions โข Use finger to track row while bubbling โข Circle answers in test booklet first, then transfer โข Develop consistent bubbling rhythm
Priority ranking:
- Fix critical errors (wrong row, wrong section)
- Answer questions you can do
- Guess on remaining questions
- Never leave blanks
Better to have: โข 20 correct answers + 10 guesses Than: โข 30 wrong answers (bubbled in wrong row)
